Follow-up trends of parasite community alteration in a marine fish after the Prestige oil-spill: shifting baselines?

2008

This study evaluates the follow-up trends in the composition and structure of the parasite communities in the marine sparid Boops boops after the Prestige oil-spill. A total of 400 fish comprising 11 seasonal samples was analyzed from three impacted localities on the Atlantic coast of Spain. A large number of parasite species was recovered only after the spill thus suggesting a substantial alteration of the marine food webs. Post-spill communities exhibited higher richness and abundance due to the significant changes in the abundance of the common species, the latter indicating accelerated parasite transmission rates. Multivariate analyses at two nested scales detected a directional trend i…

The use of genetic algorithms to solve the allocation problems in the life cycle inventory

2013

One of the most controversial issues in the development of Life Cycle Inventory (LCI) is the allocation procedure, which consists in the partition and distribution of economic flows and environmental burdens among to each of the products of a multi-output system. Because of the use of the allocation represents a source of uncertainty in the LCI results, the authors present a new approach based on genetic algorithms (GAs) to solve the multi-output systems characterized by a rectangular matrix of technological coefficients, without using computational methods such as the allocation procedure. In this Chapter, the GAs' approach is applied to an ancillary case study related to a cogeneration pr…

Parasite communities in Boops boops (L.) (Sparidae) after the Prestige oil-spill: Detectable alterations

2007

Environmental pollution affects parasite populations and communities, both directly and through effects on intermediate and final hosts. In this work, we present a comparative study on the structure and composition of metazoan parasite communities in the bogue, Boops boops, from two localities (Galician coast, Spain) affected by the Prestige oil-spill (POS). We focus on the distribution of both individual parasite species and larger functional groupings by using both univariate and multivariate analyses. Our results indicate directional trends in community composition that might be related to the Prestige oil-spill disturbance of the natural coastal communities off Galicia. Endoparasite com…

Practice of diesel fuel blends using alternative fuels: A review

2016

Abstract In order to meet the growing global energy requirement, exhaustive research is carried to develop and to use variety of renewable fuels. Concerns on the long-term availability of petroleum diesel and the stringent environmental norms have mandated the search for a renewable alternative to diesel fuel to address these problems. Diesel engines have proven their utility in the transportation, agriculture, and power sectors for small energy needs as a potential source of decentralized energy generation for electrification. Mixing of diesel fuel with biodiesel has been considered as good alternative to diesel in the past couple of years. The objective of the present study is to compare …

Researches on the Alternative Fuels Which Can Be Used to Motors

2010

The alternative fuels are substances or materials used as fuel, other than the old conventional fuels (oil, natural gases and coals).
The paper analyses the most important alternative fuels, such as: bio-diesel, alcohols and hydrogen, presenting at each category the main important characteristics, the advantages and disadvantages presented by them.
The methyl-ester which is known as bio-diesel can be used in all motors with ignition by compression, alone or mixed in any proportion with oil, with minor modifications at the injection system. Bio-diesel fuel assures the same motor power as oil does, having even a bigger cetanic number than the usual oil. After tests, it was obser…

Occupational exposure to chlorinated and petroleum solvents and mycosis fungoides.

2013

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the potential association between occupational exposure to chlorinated and petroleum solvents and mycosis fungoides (MF).METHODS: A questionnaire on lifetime job history was administered to 100 patients diagnosed with MF and 2846 controls. Odds ratios (ORs) were calculated as the measure of the association between exposure to each specific solvent and MF.RESULTS: In the total sample and in men, cases and controls did not differ in relation to exposure to any of the solvents studied. In women, an association with MF was seen for the highest level of estimated exposure to perchloroethylene (OR = 11.38; 95% confidence interval: 1.04 to 124.85) and for exposure less than …

Husk Energy Supply Systems for Sunflower Oil Mills

2020

Together with solar, wind, and hydro renewable energy sources (RES), biomass constitutes an integral part of the high-renewables electricity systems. Considerable feedstocks for electricity generation are process-based residues. Ukraine is the world leader in sunflower seed production, therefore, husk (a by-product of oil production) is a promising biofuel for combustion- based power plants. The plants consume primarily electricity and fossil fuels (natural gas or fuel oil) for steam production. Their usage affects the edible oil production cost and impacts on climate change. The above facts force us to look for alternatives. By-product (husk) utilization can reduce exhaustible energy consu…

2021

The purpose of this research is  to study the potency of chitosan synthesis of shrimp shells from Bintuni as a biosorbent of organic compound and heavy metal compound. The main procedure of chitosan synthesis is completed by insulating chitin from shrimp shells and then chitin is deacetilated to transform chitin to be chitosan. The wastewater were characterized to know the concentration of Total Organic Carbon (TOC), fat oil, and Zinc metal and studied the adsorption of each compound at 0,1; 0,5; 1; 2g  dosage chitosan.  Adsorption study result showed that chitosan can adsorb the fuel oil and Zinc metal which contained in wastewater. However, it was not adsorb the TOC compound. The yield of…

Development of an isotope dilution laser ablation ICP-MS method for multi-element determination in crude and fuel oil samples

2009

An inductively coupled plasma isotope dilution mass spectrometric (ICP-IDMS) method with direct introduction of the isotope-diluted sample into the plasma by laser ablation was developed for accurate, sensitive, fast, and simultaneous determination of trace metals in different oil samples. Metallo-organic solutions of isotope spikes (50V, 53Cr, 65Cu, 57Fe, 62Ni, 68Zn, 113Cd, 117Sn, and 206Pb) were prepared from corresponding aqueous stock solutions by using liquid–liquid extraction of complexed metal ions in isobutyl methyl ketone. The isotope-diluted sample was absorbed by a cellulose material, which was fixed in a special PTFE holder for ablation, using a laser system with high ablation r…
